Manufacturing
Discover the fascinating steps involved in creating our pottery, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques:
1. Preparing the Clay
Until the 1970s, clay preparation at our workshop involved a manual process called "terracing," where workers stomped the clay to remove impurities. Today, this step is fully mechanized, ensuring smooth and consistent clay for crafting.
2. Shaping the Pottery
Around 80% of our pottery is wheel-thrown, a versatile technique that allows us to create unique forms and small series without molds. This approach requires highly skilled artisans. The rest of our production uses pressing and stamping techniques.
3. Finishing Touches
Our distinctive decorations, such as apples, flowers, or grapes, are applied in relief using a clay-and-water mix called slip. Each piece is then carefully refined, showcasing the natural beauty of salt-glazed stoneware.
4. The Firing Process
Once dry, the pottery is meticulously arranged in the kiln, avoiding contact between pieces to prevent sticking. Firing at 1180°C, we use an open flame to achieve brilliant finishes.
- Salt-Glazed Stoneware: At peak temperature, salt is added to the kiln, creating a unique shiny, vitrified surface.
- Glazed Stoneware: For colored finishes like blue, green, or honey, glaze is applied before firing. The heat melts the glaze, resulting in vibrant, one-of-a-kind patterns.
After a slow cooling process, the kiln is opened—a moment of anticipation, as no two pieces are ever the same!
